Greenland's Inatsisartut election was bad for Trump, but good for Greenland.
The Demokraatit Party, campaigning on opposing Donald Trump, will form government for the first time in the party's history.
Over the last few weeks, Greenlandic politics has seen a historic shift. The Democratic Party won 30.3% of the popular vote, making it the first time in the party’s history where they won a plurality. Speaking to media, incoming Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said “We don’t want to be Americans. No, we don’t want to be Danes. We want to be Greenlanders. And we want our own independence in the future. And we want to build our own country by ourselves, not with his hope.”
The Democrats had traditionally been known as a Greenlandic unionist party, a party that supports Greenland staying within the Danish realm. However, very recently, the Democrats have supported independence for Greenland. Still, their support for independence is softer than some of the other parties, only supporting independence once Greenland is economically stable and self sufficient.
Going into the election, the only poll conducted for the election found that the Democrats would finish third place, with 18.8% of the vote. This placed them significantly behind the poll’s leading party, the incumbent Inuit Ataqatigiit. In the 2021 election, the Democrats only received 9.25% of the vote, so much was not expected from them this time around.
For Trump’s ambition to see Greenland being part of the United States, this was a devastating blow.
